Free Energy Star Tool for Lowering Building Carbon Footprint Achieving Utility, Emissions Savings for Business

EPA Energy Star Program Manager Explains Program Advantages, Portfolio Manager tool, in Webinar hosted by ARCHIBUS, Inc.

December, 2009, Boston, Massachusetts - 18% of CO2 emissions are associated with commercial building energy use, a figure the EPA’s Energy Star program is helping to reduce through its various initiatives and free online tools, said Energy Star Program Manager Alyssa Quarforth.

Quarforth shared the contributions being made by her organization in a Webinar hosted by ARCHIBUS, Inc., (www.archibus.com), the #1 worldwide developer of real estate, infrastructure, facilities and environmental management software.

A recording of that Webinar can be viewed at: http://www.archibus.com/webinar/fallweb09_9.cfm

“Businesses that are leaders in energy efficiency use 35% less energy than competitors,” Quarforth reported. “Energy efficient buildings emit 35% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and greater energy efficiency provides financial returns that can support future ‘green’ investments.”

Over 100,000 buildings comprising more than 14 billion square feet of space currently measure and track their energy performance with Energy Star resources, a fact that has resulted in utility bill savings to them of nearly $20 million between the years 2000 and 2008. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is estimated as being the equivalent of taking approximately 28 million vehicles off the road.

“In addition to a decreased carbon footprint, enhanced energy performance also means better equipment operation and extended life, improved worker comfort and satisfaction, improved asset values and decreased vacancy rates, as well as a better corporate image,” noted Quarforth.

Legislative mandates in government, and private sector voluntary efforts, are being supported by Energy Star’s free Portfolio Manager online tool. Designed for existing buildings, Portfolio Manager lets users assess building energy use, compares results with peer organizations, tracks energy use changes over time, as well as determining cost savings, greenhouse gas emission reductions, and even how well water usage is being managed.

An overview of the Portfolio Manager tool can be seen at http://www.energystar.gov/benchmark. Portfolio Manager provides a standardized, comparable metric of whole-building performance, segmented by industry, and uses a 1 to 100 scoring system, with 50 indicating average performance.
