California Community Organization Selects Intuit

CLEVELAND — April 27, 2009 – The Unity Council, a nonprofit community organization serving underprivileged families in Oakland, Calif., selected property management software from Intuit Real Estate Solutions to manage approximately 75 leases.

Unity works to enrich the quality of life of families, primarily in Oakland’s Fruitvale district, by offering social and economic programs to help them build wealth and work toward home ownership. Intuit Real Estate Solutions, a division of Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU), provides real estate management, portfolio management and accounting software solutions to the global real estate industry.

Unity uses the IRES software to help manage the nationally recognized Fruitvale Transit Village, a unique model of transit-oriented development that integrates mixed-income housing, retail and community space around a mass transit hub.

Unity Council Uses Suite of Intuit Products

“Our accounting practices are complicated, and IRES makes it simpler,” said Jeff Pace, chief operating officer at Unity. “For a property like the Fruitvale Village – with residential, retail, and commercial uses coexisting in multiple buildings – the ability to segregate costs is very important. IRES allows us to do that.

“We also have different types of leases and need to track them in great detail. We started with different software when we opened the Fruitvale Village, but it couldn’t handle the detailed cost accounting that we require.”

Pace is impressed with the versatility of the reports. “Our mixed use space has five or six different lease forms on which we need to calculate operating costs. MRI Commercial lets me track costs in six ways, which is what I need,” he said.

The IRES software reduces Unity’s property management costs, improves access to critical information, and ultimately leads to better decision making.

Going Beyond Property Management

The Unity organization uses other Intuit products in its community support activities. The Peralta Service Corp., a labor services company, uses QuickBooks for its accounting. In addition, AmeriCorps members – local youth who participate in leadership development and work with Unity on community projects – use TurboTax to help low-income families prepare their tax returns.

“Our clients are finding value in multiple Intuit products,” said Jeff Thompson, division president of IRES. “We’re excited to support their widespread and worthwhile efforts.”
